Duke of Edinburgh

Jack Guy —

At the beginning of this week three other students and myself set off to tramp over night at the Wharfdale Hut. This was the first part of the Adventurous Journey" element for these three students, but was my qualifying journey for my Bronze Award.

Thankfully the weather was kind as we carried all our gear to camp. We walked from Coopers Creek Carpark to the Hut, 14 km in and back out the next day. Not everything along the way was smooth sailing as when we arrived to the clearing we were setting up to camp at we realised some had the wrong tent poles and to add insult to injury we were getting massacred by sand flies! We had to stay in the hut which was super hot and stuffy but we played card games and just all hung out. It was a great opportunity to forge relationships and explore, problem solve and build our confidence. Spending time with these students who I had never really spoken to before turned out to be a really awesome time.

Duke of Edinburgh is a great opportunity to develop and build confidence, resilience and teamwork. At Bronze, Silver and Gold levels it provides a recognised International qualification that looks great on applications and CVs. It offers the opportunity to take you out of your comfort zone and gain really useful skills for both work and life. I'm moving into my final year at Darfield High School with the Bronze qualification and am hoping to achieve Silver before I leave here. The sooner you get involved the more supportive the school can be. I encourage you to get involved, it's an awesome opportunity.

Huge thanks to Ms Pinteric and Mr Cate for their guidance, instruction and helping us along the way. Your support and encouragement is really appreciated and valued.
