Hillary Outdoors - Torpedo 7 Get2Go Challenge

On Monday 12 September DHS had two teams competing in four 50-60 minutes challenges

First up was Canoeing and Paddle Boarding - a great start to the morning - a good way to wake up in the cool water of Lake Rua. We had a couple canoes trying to floating upside down and a lot of 360 turns when the canoes wouldn't co-operate and head in the right direction. It was good being a spectator!

Onto Problem Solving - for those that have experienced some Top Team activities, you will know what is in involved - getting marbles into buckets using an inch pipe, filling buckets from the lake with 3 foot pipes full of holes and then onto the lava challenge where there was quite a lot of discussion on how to get the team across the pretend lava, in gumboots (far to big for their feet) without using the same person twice to carry?

After a quick ride back to The Groynes it was onto the Mountain Bike Challenge - two bikes 8 riders on a windy track through the pine trees, each lap was about 1.5 minutes rotating riders, the challenge was how many could they do? The mixed team completed 45 and the girls team achieved 39 - well done! Some tired bodies after that one.

Then the last activity - the orienteering course through the many windy paths at the Groynes - the teams were allocated 50 minutes to find their check points and if they completed this with about 10 minutes to go they were given a bonus task.

Thanks to the parents who came along to support the teams, and to Lexi who instigated the event. This is open to all year 9 and 10 students, so just a warm up for 2023!
