Mathematics (Pāngarau)

Mathematics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in quantities, space, and time. Statistics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in data. These two disciplines are related but involve different ways of thinking and solving problems. Both equip ākonga with effective means for modeling, analysing, and interpreting the world in which they live.

Compulsory: Maths is compulsory for Year 11 students. This can be selected from either:

Level 1 Mathematics (1MAT),

OR

Level 1 Mathematics with Numeracy (1MAN).

Level 1 Mathematics

1MAT - Level 1 Mathematics

This course is about developing mathematical language skills and techniques required to solve problems and the statistical skills required to analyse data. The learning will cover concepts from Number, Probability, Measurement, Geometry, Algebra, and Statistics.

Credits: 10 Internal and 5 - 10 External

Leads to: Level 2 Mathematics with Statistics or Calculus or Level 2 Financial Capabilities.

Approx cost: $36 for workbooks

Equipment: Workbooks, a scientific calculator, laptop.

Contact: Heidi Clark (hc@darfield.school.nz)

1MAN - Level 1 Mathematics with Numeracy

This course will spend the first half of the year working towards the numeracy co-requisite exam and then Level 1 internal credits. This course is not suitable for those students who already have achieved the Numeracy co-requisite. Results should be available in mid-August for those students who attempted the Numeracy co-requisite in June 2023.

Credits: 10 Numeracy credits from the co-req exam and 5 internal credits at Level 1

Leads to: Level 2 Mathematics with Statistics or Level 2 Financial Capabilities.

Approx cost: $36 for workbooks

Equipment: Workbooks, a scientific calculator, laptop.

Level 2 Mathematics

2MAS - Level 2 Mathematics with Statistics

This course is about developing mathematical language skills and techniques required to solve problems and the statistical skills required to analyse data.

Credits: 13 Internal Credits and 4 External Credits

Leads to: Level 3 Mathematics with Statistics

Approx cost: $30.00—$36.00 (for the workbooks)

Equipment: Workbooks, a scientific or graphics calculator (graphics calculator is useful, but not essential), laptop.

2MAC - Level 2 Mathematics with Calculus

This course is all about developing mathematical language skills and techniques required to solve problems. There is an emphasis on describing problems in mathematical language and problem-solving strategies. This course is open-entry. Good algebra skills are essential. A conversation with your Year 11 maths teacher is highly recommended.

Credits: 7 - 9 Internal Credits and 9 - 13 External Credits

Leads to: Either, or both, of Level 3 Mathematics with Calculus and Level 3 Mathematics with Statistics.

Approx cost: $30.00 - $36.00 (for the workbooks)
