Pathways
Pathways is an educational program aimed at senior students, that aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the world of work. This program is designed to provide students with the essential skills and attributes that employers seek in real-life work scenarios. Additionally, Pathways can be taken alongside Gateway, which will afford students the opportunity to combine this theory with practical work experience.
The primary goal of Pathways is to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in various professional settings. By participating in this program, students will gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to thrive in the workplace and develop the competence required by employers.
Pathways students may study common theory studies at NCEA Levels 1 and 2 for 20+ credits in:
- Writing for business and employment, including job search skills and negotiating agreements with employers
- Advanced Work-Based First Aid
- Workplace Health & Safety
- Complex Life & Employment Forms; Stress Management; Employment Law; Workplace Problem Solving
- Pathways Planning; Work Placement

Gateway
Gateway offers a unique opportunity for students to bridge the gap between school and the workforce. It provides a platform for them to develop both academic knowledge and practical skills, which are essential for a successful transition into the professional world. Through this program, students are required to complete 20 NCEA credits in a specially designed program, tailored to their needs and interests.
One of the highlights of the GATEWAY program is the chance for students to engage in work experience placements with employers. This hands-on experience allows them to apply the theoretical knowledge they have gained in the classroom to real-world settings.
Darfield High School currently has up to 50 students studying Gateway courses of 20+ credits at NCEA Level 2 in:
- Agriculture; Animal Care
- Aviation
- Automotive Engineering, Small Engines, Welding
- Early Childhood Education
- Eco-Tourism
- Equine
- Leadership, including Military Preparation
- Manufacturing
- Office Administration & Management
- Outdoor Instructor & Park Ranger

Dual Enrolment
Dual enrolment is an opportunity for secondary school students in years 11 - 13 to enhance their education. This program allows students to spend one or two days per week studying with a tertiary provider for the entire school year, alongside their regular NCEA studies. The programme offers flexibility, as students can choose to attend these courses for either one or two days a week. This means they can continue their regular studies at school while also diving deeper into subjects they are passionate about. It's an opportunity to broaden their knowledge and explore new fields or subjects of interest.
It's important to note that NCEA studies at school remain a key focus. This program is designed to supplement rather than replace the existing curriculum. The additional days spent with the tertiary provider provide an enriching and stimulating experience that complements regular classroom learning. We highly recommend that students consider choosing the 1-day courses for their first year of dual enrollment. This will help minimise the amount of school they miss. We understand that balancing dual enrolment courses and high school responsibilities can be challenging, so opting for the 1-day courses can provide a more manageable workload.
