Ngāi tahu, Kōkirihia Rangatahi Wānanga

For over a year now, Darfield High School has been involved in Kōkirihia Rangatahi Wānanga. Leo and three other students have been working with other students from Canterbury schools looking at the impact streaming has on students. It has been a very insightful and valuable experience for these students. This year they are looking at how they can share the impact that streaming has on students with other schools and agencies in New Zealand.

On 4 April we attended Ngāi Tahu's Te Wai Pounamu building to talk about ending streaming in schools. Streaming is a practice in which classes are segmented by ability, and usually, Maori and Pasifika are held back from reaching their full potential. Kōkirihia aims to remove streaming on a government level, so that every New Zealander cannot be held back by the school system.
