Careers Department term one overview and looking ahead to next term.

Our Careers Department team has enjoyed a busy term with a lot happening.

Students who are dual-enrolled at tertiary institutions, began their courses at Ara, Avon City Ford Training Services, Vision College, Ara - Trades Campus, and the National Trade Academy. Our students are studying a variety of areas, including engineering, construction, baking, psychology, horticulture, animal care, and more.

Our students who are studying equine, aviation and hairdressing are working through their course materials and assessments and we have a few students out in our local community undertaking invaluable work experience.

Students have enjoyed engaging visits from University Future Student Officers, from Otago, Canterbury, Lincoln and Victoria, as well as a visit earlier this week, from Ara Institute of Canterbury. Our year 13 students also enjoyed spending a day exploring the Canterbury University Campus along with the Halls of Residence.

This week we have students attending a three day Christchurch Rugby Coaching Course, as well as 18 senior students successfully completing their Advanced Work Based First Aid Certificates. Towards the end of last month, we had another group of students complete their Health and Safety Certificates, which enabled the students to achieve a package of fourteen credits.

During the school holidays, we have 16 students enrolled at the Southern Institute of Technology. These students will be completing a MIG Welding course over four days. Its is fantastic to see these students taking the opportunity to upskill themselves.

Looking ahead to term two, we have the much anticipated Annual Careers Expo, parents and caregivers are most welcome to attend, please remember to sign in and out at the main office. Our year 12 students, will have the opportunity to attend the University of Canterbury Discovery Day and we look forward to helping our senior students with their university Halls of Residence and Scholarship applications.

Finally, we are always keen to hear from local business's in the community, who are interested in hosting a work experience student, in particular we are currently needing the following types of business's, Plumbing, Electrical and Building. If this is something you keen to discuss further please email me careers@darfield.school.nz.
