Onuku Year 10

Year 10s had the privilege of staying overnight at Onuku Marae to compliment the learning we have been doing in Social Studies about the history of Banks Peninsula | Horomaka. Thank you to the following staff for giving up their time to attend camp, Mrs Lee, Mr Maude, Mrs McNabb, Miss Blakemore, Mr McDonald, Miss Pinteric and Miss Tregear. Also thanks to Mr England and Whaea Niki for their karanga and whaikororeo at the powhiri (welcome onto the marae). This camp couldn't happen without the knowledge and expertise of Whaea Ngaio and Matua Adrian. We are also very appreciative of Waka Captains Iaean and Craig for giving up their time so we could paddle around Te Ana Marina at Lyttelton Port on the beautiful Kotukumairangi waka. Below are some student reflections about their camp experience.

I can't think of what to say about it other than it was great. I mean, I’m speechless, Probably the reason why it was great is because it surprised me so much, for one I was not expecting a a buffet dinner with ribs! Just saying I have never been to a buffet dinner that has ribs. Another thing that surprised me was the stuff with the sticks | Te Rakau, well, I wasn’t surprised, it was just that I loved the games we played and the that entire experience was awesome. Another thing I liked was the waka, that was pretty cool.

Also for a school camp I had a pretty good night sleep too. I could go on forever writing how good the camp was but I’m going to rap it up now.

Shout out to Mrs Lee for organising this amazing experience. Also shout out to all the people at the Marae for hosting us and all the teachers that gave up their time to supervise us.

I really enjoyed the trip to Onuku Marae as there were many activities to participate in, including the waka experience at Lyttelton, Ti Rakau and flax weaving as well as being told more about the history of Takapuneke. It was a great experience to be there and see where things had been happening in the past and learn more about the culture. We also had the opportunity to be with friends, classmates and people I normally wouldn't talk to outside of a school environment. Overall it was an enjoyable and fun experience I wish to do again.

Oceana, Celia and I enjoyed the Marae camp for the following reasons. First the views were amazing and the nature was very colourful. The harbour was our favourite part as we all loved the water and exploring under the rocks to find little fishes and crabs. We also enjoyed mingling with the other students we wouldn't usually hang out with.

We wish this camp was longer than one night as it would make up for the long drive, it would also help us make more memories for life.
