Year 9 River cleanup day

In Year 9 Social Studies we’ve been learning about sustainability and kaitiakitanga in protecting our environment and waterways. On Monday, we went to the Waimakariri river mouth at Kairaki Beach to do a big rubbish clean up

I really enjoyed walking along the beach and picking up rubbish. We found a lot of interesting items of rubbish, from little bits of polystyrene to shoes, wire, car tyres and doors! We picked up a whooping 140 kgs of rubbish!

Afterward, we were rewarded with a session at the Aqualand Waterpark which was by far the best part of the trip. I really appreciate all the time and effort put into organising the whole trip.

We would like to thank the following people for their involvement in the day.

  • Lesley Ottey Waimakariri District Council - Director of Eco Educate .

  • Justin Fletcher - Educator with Eco Educate .

  • Simon Woods - ECAN Ranger .

  • Elizabeth Lovell - Waste Educator with Selwyn District Council

  • DHS Teachers - Mrs Clark, Ms Henshaw, Mrs Rudman, Mr Quinn, Miss Tregear, Miss Dawson, Mr Dickens and Mrs Lee.

  • Also special thanks to Bunnings Warehouse (Airport Branch) who kindly donated 30 High-Vis Vests.
