Year 13 History Trip to Akaroa

On Tuesday our Year 13 History class went to Akaroa. When we got to Akaroa we went to the school where we met Mr Brittenden, the History teacher there. We had a shared morning tea where we talked about what event or people we would like to have met/ seen in the past.

We then went out to Takapuneke where Mr Brittenden told us in more depth about the history of the area, focusing on the massacre that occurred as part of the Elizabeth Incident. . We then walked to the Britomart Monument to discuss the French influence in the area and to the newly built Takapuneke memorial.

After a fish and chip lunch on the beachfront, we headed to Onawe to walk the peninsula and see the site of Te Rauparaha’s massacre. It was a good walk and some singing took place on the way back down. We ended the trip with an ice cream stop in Little River, and we made our way back to school.

This trip would not have been possible without the work of Mrs Lee and Miss Tregear in organising and narrating the area's history and organising the talk with Mr Brittenden. This was a great trip and an amazing way to end the year in History, and high school.
