Use your Creative Talents to Highlight the Harmful Effects of Vaping to Rangatahi!

The Don’t Get Sucked In Poster challenge is an art competition for Year 7 – 13 students organised by the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ.

We are asking young people to design a poster to highlight the risks of vaping to rangatahi.  This competition is an opportunity to learn more about vaping harm and share this information in a creative and impactful way.

When:

Entries open Monday 8 May and close Friday 30 June.

The challenge:

Design an A4 or A3 portrait or landscape poster which communicates risks of vaping to young people.  The posters can be created using any art medium: painting, drawing, collage or digital design.  All posters must include the Don’t Get Sucked In website address and must contain one of the following messages:

  • Don’t get sucked in – vaping is harmful to your health and wellbeing
  • Safer than smokes? Some vapes have the same amount of nicotine as a packet of cigarettes
  • Don’t gamble with your lungs – we don’t know the long-term effects of vaping yet
  • Vaping harms your lungs and the planet – e-waste from vapes is a growing problem
  • Don’t get sucked in – vapes have been designed to get you hooked

Rules:

  1. All content in the poster must be the original work of the entrant.
  2. Posters can be written in English or te reo Māori, or a combination of both languages.
  3. The poster should not include any photos of real-life people.
  4. The poster should not include any inappropriate language (swear words) or inappropriate images (violence, weapons).
  5. You can enter the competition as a pair or group, but any prize won will be shared by the pair or group.
  6. If you include facts or statistics, please ensure they are accurate. Please use credible sources and list your source(s) in a separate word or pdf document with your entry.

Judging:

The poster will be evaluated by members of our scientific and vaping education advisory board and rangatahi on the following criteria:

  • Ability to engage the target audience – young New Zealanders
  • The accuracy of the message
  • The impact of the message
  • Creativity and innovation

Prizes:

We will choose one overall winner and four runners up.

The overall winner will receive a $300 Prezzy card plus $100 worth of art supplies. Their winning entry will feature on the cover of the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation’s Better Breathing magazine and be made available as a downloadable resource for schools and community groups on the Don’t Get Sucked In website. In addition, Foundation Chief Executive Letitia Harding and Māori Community Liaison Sharon Pihema will visit the winning artist’s school to present their prize and run an interactive vaping education workshop for a group of up to 30 rangatahi, by approval of the school principal.

The four runners up will each receive a $50 Prezzy card plus $100 worth of art supplies. Their posters will be made available as downloadable resources for schools and community groups on the Don’t Get Sucked In website.

The Foundation’s Better Breathing magazine is available both online and in print with a viewing audience of 8,000, and the Don’t Get Sucked In website is viewed by thousands of Kiwis every year.

This is a great way to get your artistic skills noticed!

Why:

Youth vaping is at epidemic levels in New Zealand. Young people, families and educators are all calling out for more information about vaping and how to educate our youth on its risks.  The Foundation has been running the Don’t Get Sucked In website since 2020.  This vaping educational site offers clear, factual information on vaping and its risks.

We know that rangatahi are keen to champion of the importance of healthy lungs, which is why we are looking at new ways to spread important health messages about vaping.  This competition aims to get young people thinking critically about vaping and sharing their knowledge with others in a creative way.
