William Pike Launch 2023Year 7 presentation by Sport Coordinator (Pip Deans)

DHS Sport T1 Wk 6 2023

William Pike Challenge

This year all of our Year 7 students are participating in the William Pike Challenge.

On Thursday 9th March William gave two presentations to the school, one to all the year 7 students and then another in the evening for parents, sponsored and the public.

Thank you to the Westview Special Fund for supporting this new initiative.

Programme Outcomes

Develops students’ 21st century skills needed for the future: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, flexibility and adaptability, initiative, social interaction, productivity and accountability, communication, leadership and responsibility

Increasing capability; decision making, organisation, solving problems, leadership, communication

Increasing self efficacy and confidence

Increased positive outlook and challenge orientation, e.g; Since doing the WPC, I feel less afraid in attempting/trying things outside my comfort zone.

Increased awareness of future opportunities in all aspects of life

Increased adaptability and resilience

Increased community mindedness Sense of belonging and connectedness to home, school and community Student focus and direction while in a formative stage of life

Each student, over the course of the year will complete a three elements.

Outdoor Activities

Outdoor Activities provide opportunities for young people to step outside of their comfort zone, take risks, build confidence and strengthen relationships with peers. Outdoor Activities not only build positive wellbeing, 21st-century skills and an explorer mindset, they also remind our youth about the beauty and accessibility of New Zealand’s landscape.

Bushwalks, a high ropes course, mountain biking, orienteering or rock climbing nare great examples.

Studies have shown that spending time in nature improves mental well-being by lifting your mood and decreasing feelings of depression, anxiety and stress. Investing in our youths’ mental health means they’re more prepared to overcome challenge and change that will inevitably come their way

Community Service

Community Service allows young people to explore, develop and strengthen empathy, humility and compassion. Characteristics many young people may not have had the opportunity to untap. Giving back to the community also provides opportunities for young people to step outside of their comfort zone, develop communication skills, connectedness with the local community, peers and whānau and embrace a greater sense of purpose.

Examples of Community Service include tree planting, rubbish pickup, charity fundraising, community food drives or helping at an organisation like the SPCA.

Many young people continue to do voluntary work well after they’ve completed the William Pike Challenge; those feel-good feelings are hard to shake off!

Passion Projects

A Passion Project is a sport or hobby that’s totally new to the young person and are usually done in their own time. They encourage young people to take on a challenge and develop their self belief, work ethic and commitment. Trying something new and working hard to master it develops determination, concentration and resilience.

Learning a new sport or a new language, learning how to cook, photography, horse riding, or sketching – Passion Project options are endless!

Activities offered by the school, like a language or sport can be attributed to Passion Project hours.

Community Help

We are looking for ideas and ways that our students can help in our community. If you have anything that our Year 7's can help with for their Community Service please contact Camille Cartman at cc@darfield.school.nz.If you would like to know more about the William Pike Challenge please go to https://www.williampikechallenge.co.nz/

Sports Evening

Following the William Pike Presentations we took the opportunity to introduce the Sports Team of TIC Sam Forward, Pip Deans, Sports Coordinator and Assistant Co-ordinators Jo Beswick and Lexie Sinclair Dockerill, along with our student Head of Sports Reps Louis Ridgen and Isla McPherson.

The evening was to provide information about our sports programme and how it has evolved over the past three years and our future plans.

Cansail - Fox II

We were offered a sailing experience as a teambuilding exercise and what better way that to bring all our Sporting Leaders together and enjoy a day out.  A group of 25 students and 5 teachers and adults headed to Akaroa for the day.

We were given the opportunity to crew a Small Ship, the Fox II which offers so much more than simply the chance to learn sailing skills. Through this unique form of adventure training, CanSail aims to provide each young person with:

  • a physical and psychological challenge;
  • team participation in a new environment;
  • an awareness of leadership skills and personal responsibilities within a crew;
  • team spirit shaped by tolerance and an understanding of others;
  • an appreciation of effective communication; and
  • a sense of achievement and increased self-confidence.

The mission of Sail Training worldwide is to make a real difference for young people
