Extreme Environments

Year 12 general science went on a trip to the Antarctic centre for our topic of extreme environments. We looked at what makes an environment extreme, things like too cold, too hot, too dry, too wet etc. So we went to the Antarctic centre to experience these things ourselves, we first talked about what makes the Antarctic an extreme environment, it is the driest, coldest, highest wind speeds, and whitest continent on the planet. First we went into “the storm” which was a room that got to -18 degrees which is nothing compared to the -60 degrees it can get to in Antarctica, with a record temperature of -89.2 degrees. We also saw the husky’s and learned about how they survived in Antarctica and were the reason man could get to Antarctica. The water is around 2 degrees and most animals get in the water to keep warm, Blake and Andrew got the class record of lasting 15 minutes with their hands in the water.

We all loved our experience at the Antarctic centre and I’m sure we are all glad we don't have to stay in the -18 degree temperatures for longer than 5 minutes.
