Ko Wero Pānui | Reading Challenge

Open to Years 9 and 10

The English department is excited to announce our Year 9 and 10 reading challenge, Ko Wero Pānui! Aimed at nurturing students' love for reading and developing their literacy skills, the wero will run throughout 2024. Those who complete it will be treated to a pizza party at the end of the year.

The goal is simple: we want students to challenge themselves according to their individual enjoyment and reading ability, while exploring a range of topics and text types. We’ve ensured that the challenge is accessible for everyone and expect that most students will succeed with it.

After reading each text, students must write a short response, which their English teacher will check off. They’ll have regular class time for this and, if necessary, can catch up on it for homework.

Whānau, you can support your child with this wero by discussing what they are reading, encouraging them to explore topics they love, and even sharing your own reading experiences. Reading for pleasure not only enhances your child’s literacy skills, but also fosters their ability to think critically and empathise with others.

If you would like more information about the specifics of the challenge, have a kōrero with your child, or feel free to get in touch with their English teacher.
