Learning Japanese gives ākonga the chance to communicate in a different language, and to gain an appreciation of a fascinating culture. Ākonga develop their speaking and listening skills, as well as reading and using the unique Japanese writing system, which can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Ākonga will find knowledge of Japanese very helpful if they are planning on travelling to Japan or hosting Japanese visitors.

9JAP - Japanese

You will learn to talk about yourself with some information to students from Japan in Japanese.

By the end of the course, you will be able to: greet, farewell, give apologies, and thank someone. Ask someone to do something. Talk about yourself, animals, classroom objects, and colours. 

Read and write 46 Hiragana and learn more about Japanese culture such as Manga.

10JAP - Japanese

You will learn to talk about yourself with information such as your family, pet, favourite things, hobbies, and ideas and opinions in Japanese.

By the end of the course, you will be able to: engage in short, personal conversations, and understand a range of short written and oral texts mainly of familiar language. Create short passages in Hiragana, Katakana, and some Kanji, as appropriate.

You will be working from levels 1-4 of the curriculum.
