Year 9 River Clean Up

In Year 9 Social Studies we’ve been learning about sustainability and kaitiakitanga in protecting our environment and waterways. To put this learning into practice, we went to the Waimakariri River mouth at Kairaki Beach to do a big rubbish clean up. The students really enjoyed walking along the beach and picking up rubbish. We found a lot of interesting items of rubbish, from little bits of polystyrene to shoes, fishing nylon and rusty old drums and wooden bench seats! A seal even swam past and gave us a wave. We were trying to beat last year’s total of 140kg and we got close with 110 kgs of rubbish.

Afterward, students were rewarded with a session at the Aqualand Waterpark which they thoroughly enjoyed, even Mr McDonald and Miss Pinteric got on the waterpark and give the Year 9s a run for their money.

We would like to thank the following people for their involvement in the day.

  • Lesley Ottey Waimakariri District Council - Director of Eco Educate .

  • Elizabeth Lovell Waste Educator with Selwyn District Council

  • DHS Teachers Miss Pinteric, Mr Maude, Mr Agnew, Mr McDonald, Mr Jackson, Miss Tregear, Mr Dickens and Mrs Lee.
