Raranga | Weaving

Year 9 and 10 Raranga classes in full swing.

The Raranga classes have started really well with students learning tikanga around harvesting and working with the harakeke | flax. They have created putiputi | flowers, kono | four cornered baskets and kōmore | bracelets.

The classes are also demonstrating being good kaitiaki by helping to clean up the pā harakeke | a group of flax plants and the koru garden.

We are looking to establish a new pā harakeke this year by getting some plants from Manaaki Whenua from the National collection of Harakeke. The pā harakeke will be a resource for the school and the wider community to use in years to come.

If there are any Māori weavers in the area that would like to support the school with this it would be greatly appreciated. Please get in touch with Louise Blakemore via email (lb@darfield.school.nz)
