Toi Māori - Raranga | Māori Art - Weaving

Te toi whakairo, ka ihiihi, ka aweawe te ao katoa. | Artistic excellence makes the world sit up in wonder.

In 2024 there is an exciting opportunity for our Year 9 and 10 students. Raranga | Weaving will be added to the option rotation.

This course will teach the history and creative use of raranga | weaving. Students will learn about Māori patterns, design, tīkanga along with the practical skills to create and work with different types of fibre. Students will learn basic weaving techniques and processes to be able to create practical projects, ie kete (baskets). To assist with the running of this course we would be grateful if anyone has either of the following items (see photos) that they could donate to the school. We are looking for old shearing combs to help size the harakeke and pin frogs (used in flower arranging) to shred the harakeke. Any donations can be dropped to the school office or please contact Louise Blakemore lb@darfield.school.nz if you require them to be collected. Ngā mihi nui.
