AED Donation
Huge thanks to Embracing Hearts and Heart Kids for arranging the donation of an AED to KBS! Special thanks to Sheena and Liam (S17) for their part in making this happen. The AED will be located in the hall kitchen so community users of the hall can access this too should an emergency arise. Thank you very much!
Football Goals
We are very grateful to Pub Charity for a grant of $5,392.16 for the purchase of two football goals for our large field area. These have been installed this week and we look forward to them having lots of use by our students. Thank you!
Thank you to the PTA!
We are really grateful to the KBS PTA for their donation of $4,500 to purchase structured literacy games and resources for our junior classes. This is a huge help from the PTA’s fundraising efforts. Thank you!
Kaiapoi Maritime Heritage Trust
Our sincere thanks to the trust for the generous donation of two books for our school library. ‘Taking the Bar - A History of Kaiapoi Port’ by Colin Amodeo and Paul Croucher and ‘Tuhoe Tales - The story of a motor ship saved from the scrapper’ by Colin Amodeo. These books contain wonderful local history and are a great addition to the library for our students.

Teacher Only Days
As part of the settlement of the teachers’ employment contract which covers the period, 1 July 2019 until I July 2022, Boards of Trustees are required to provide 8 teacher only days to assist with teacher workload. The details around these days are as follows:
Accord Teacher Only Days for primary settings
Arising from the recent employment agreement negotiations for the Primary Teachers’ Collective Agreement, the Primary Principals’ Collective Agreement, the Area School Teachers’ Collective Agreement and the Area School Principals’ Collective Agreement it was agreed that any one principal or teacher is entitled to a maximum of 8 teacher only days. We had teacher only days planned in terms two and three this year, but postponed them following the extended period of lockdown realising the pressure on families. These days do need to be provided for staff so Teacher only days, with Board of Trustees approval, are now planned for:
1. Thursday 12th November 2020
2. Monday 1st February 2021
3. Tuesday 2nd February 2021
Please note the first day of school for students in 2021 will be Wednesday 3rd February 2021.
These days are to provide teachers and principals with additional time to:
- Refresh and deepen their knowledge and practice around the local curriculum (within the context of the removal of national standards)
- Strengthen their understanding of the use of assessment tools for learning and teaching
- Respond to the recommendations of the education work programme in the Curriculum, Progress and Achievement (CPA) Report
- Familiarise themselves with curriculum work changes that will become available over the term of the collective agreements.
- Curriculum Progress and Achievement report[PDF, 671 KB]
- The teacher only days, both in terms of actual days and use must be set in consultation with the Board of Trustees.
- Because schools will be closed for instruction, it is important that parents and whānau are given at least a term’s notice of the dates.
