Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons at the Kaiapoi Aquatic Centre start this coming Friday and they will continue through until the 6th December. These will be at a cost of $14 for seven sessions; your contribution towards this would be greatly appreciated.

Athletics Day

Information has already been sent out for our upcoming Athletics Day. If you are able to help at all on the day by supervising a year group or helping at one of the specific sports then please let Rochelle know.

HPV Immunisation

If your child has already received their first dose, staff from the CDHB will be visiting school, so that your child can receive their second dose. Please try to ensure that your child is at school on this day.

Pegasus Zone Athletics Day

Your child will be informed the week following our school athletics whether they will be representing our school at Pegasus Zones. Even if a child places first in a particular event, it does not mean that they will necessarily go directly forward for that event, as a number of events have a set standard that has to be met and there are limits to how many events your child can compete in. Once Rochelle has talked to the students about the events they will be participating in, information will then come home to families.

Kahawai Speech Finals

These will be held in the school hall on Wednesday 6th November in our school hall. Each studio will have four representatives – two from Year 7 and two from Year 8. Our overall winners from each year level will then proceed to the Belfast Kaiapoi Rotary Club competition, which is usually held in early December.

School Houses – Freyberg, Hillary, Rutherford and Seddon

This term students in Kahawai will be able to earn tokens when seen demonstrating our school values. Each week these tokens will be added up across the three classes, each week the top house will earn an extra 15 minute break, at the end of Week Four the top house will be acknowledged by going to the Kaiapoi Skate Park for the afternoon and at the end of the term the overall winning house will have a free BBQ and afternoon at the Kaiapoi Aquatic Centre.

Students will also be able to earn points towards their house from participating at our upcoming Athletics Day – one point for every activity they participate in, as well as a bonus 3 points for coming first, 2 points for second and 1 point for third. This amount will be added on to the end of term total.

KBS Production – “Minecraft – The Musical”

Jessica Gadsby has been very busy auditioning and now working with students across our school who have earnt themselves a lead role as well as in our choir. Students in Kahawai will be participating in a dance that is being overseen by Annette and some of our students. More information will come out soon in regards to what your child will need for their costume. If you know that your child will not be able to participate on the two allocated evenings, can you please let us know as soon as possible.

High School Orientation Days

High schools run their Orientation Days throughout Term Four. Please ensure that your child attends, as it is an opportunity for them to look around their school, meet staff and other Year 9 students.

Most of our Year 8’s will be attending KHS in 2020. Their orientation is to be held on the 5th December from 9am-12pm at the high school. Any Year 8’s attending KHS next year are to go directly to KHS on that morning and they will then be met by one of our KBS staff at the end of the orientation to return to school.

Year 8 Formal

Information specific to this event will come out as a separate newsletter closer to the time for our Year 8 students and whānau. If you have any questions or you know that your child will not be attending, please come and talk to Rochelle in S.13.

2020 Class Teacher

This is an opportunity for our Year 7’s to meet their teacher for the following year and to begin spending some time getting to know one another a little more before the end of this year.

Speeches

Over the next few weeks, your child will be working on writing and delivering a speech as part of our writing programme. Four children from each class will be chosen to represent their studio, two Year 7’s and two Year 8’s and these speeches will be presented to all those in Kahawai on the 14th November. The top Year 7 and Year 8 student will then go on to represent KBS at the Rotary Club Belfast Kaiapoi competition, which is held in early December.

Iceskating

This is an annual Kahawai event for those students who would like to attend. More information will follow closer to the time.

Year 5-8 Senior Prize Giving

This will be held in our school hall on Thursday 12th December, starting at 7pm. Here is an opportunity for us all to acknowledge our senior students for their hard work over the year, to present our academic and sporting awards and to farewell our Year 8’s as they move onto high school in 2020. All students in Kahawai are expected to attend, in full school uniform.

Home Learning

Home learning is a very easy way for your child to earn credits as part of Mana Tangata. Please support your child with this and ensure that it is completed and brought into school each week and on time.

“Mana Tangata” – Kahawai Leadership Programme

Congratulations to those students who have been busy earning credits over the last term, we now have a number at bronze level and students at silver, gold and gold plus. We will continue to acknowledge these students at Whānau Time. Encourage your child to keep working hard and to think about what they could do to earn their community service hours.

School Hats

With Term Four rolling round, it is time to wear our bucket hats. If your child has bronze or above, then they are able to wear a bucket hat of their choice. Those who do not have bronze as yet, then their hat must be a school one, which can be purchased from Kaiapoi Monograms. Students who do not have a hat, will need to either go to the library or sit under the allocated tree during their break times.

As you can see yet again Kahawai staff and students are faced with a busy term and if it has been anything like the other three, it will be over before we know it. Your child will be reminded again that we are here to learn, to stay focused on the task at hand and to always be prepared to give it their very best both in and out of the classroom.

Being a senior student at KBS there are certain expectations that we put on them, being the older student, like in any whānau they are looked up to by our younger students and there are certain responsibilities that go with that role. It is great to see so many of them stepping up into this role and we will continue to encourage this for the remainder of the year.
