Matariki and the connection to those who have passed

Lara Kirk —

Matariki is a time to look back on the past, consider the present and set aspirations for the future. Traditionally, for some iwi, it was also a time to acknowledge the dead and release their spirits to become stars. Each of the nine whetῡ (stars), in the constellation represent aspects of our environment and our well-being.

One that I find fascinating is the whetῡ Pōhutakawa. Pōhutukawa represents our loved ones who have passed on and encourages us to remember them. Grief, and remembering loved ones can be an incredibly challenging part of life, particularly with young people. I like to think about this whetῡ giving us an opportunity to acknowledge the passing of loved ones as part of the life cycle and remembering them as a way to celebrate our love for them.

When you join us next Wednesday the first of the single pou (pouwhenua - posts) after you come in the Howden Drive gates, is a place where we encourage you to consider the past year. Please use this as an opportunity to, as a family, remember any loved ones who have passed, any challenges or successes and take the time to acknowledge what has come before now.
