Matariki Storytelling with Matua Darren
Kaumātua Darren Rewi joined us on Tuesday morning to bring to life some of the stories of Matariki.
Matua Darren joined us for a staff breakfast on Tuesday morning, then held a parent session in the staffroom.
After that we gathered the whole school in the Library (this is the first time we've done this!) for a very special session with Matua Darren.
We learnt about how Matariki was formed when Tāwhirimātea ripped out his eyes in anger at his parents (Ranginui and Papatūānuku) being torn apart. These eye fragments created the whetū (stars) in the Matariki cluster.
Something extra special that we also learnt was that our school karakia is actually the first ever Karakia that was spoken.
We always love having Matua Darren at school!
