Welcome to Te Oraka Shirley Intermediate!

Brett Cooper —

It is an exciting time to be a part of the Te Oraka Shirley Intermediate team.

Our rebuild/refurbishment programme is well underway which is creating a physical environment that enables ākonga/learners to flourish. Our roll is growing, however, our main focus is not on increasing our roll number; it’s continuing on our journey to becoming an awesome local school.

We have a high number of new dedicated staff who have brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise resulting in engaging and creative learning environments. New buildings are amazing. However, let’s be honest, it’s what happens within them which is of the utmost importance to improving students' learning and wellbeing.

Staff collaborate effectively to provide many opportunities for students in and outside of the learning bases. Activities range from participating in sports teams, river crossing activities, sailing, Top Team activities, sewing, digitech and food technology, as well as music lessons from the talented Shirley District Music School tutors.

We are very fortunate to have a bilingual unit (Te Tāhu Rua Reo). TTRR is currently reviewing the kaupapa (purpose) of the unit as well as creating expectations and a graduate profile. This means identifying the skills, qualities, and values our community wants our Māori learners to possess before they leave our kura/school.

Everything we do is based around our FIRE values (Fairness, Integrity, Responsibility, and Excellence) and motto ‘On FIRE for Learning’. We are building a local curriculum which is based on the needs of our students. We are working together to help your child make significant academic progress. We also work collaboratively to help them improve their self-awareness and self-regulation skills so they can interact successfully with others.

We will have an enrollment zone in place from 2024 onwards, so please check the zone on our website. If you live outside our zone we still strongly encourage you to enrol your child at our school as we will carry out a ballot if enrolments exceed places available. We are already receiving enrolments for 2024.

Feel free to pop in and say hello and we look forward to partnering with you and your child as we move forward.

Ngā mihi nui
