Room 6 Term 2

Liam Levy —

Our inquiry this term centres on the theme of Kotahitanga: With perseverance, a singular or collective perspective can create change. This powerful concept will guide many of our discussions and projects across the term.

Kia ora whānau,

I hope you are all keeping well as we ease into Term 2 with the cooler mornings and recent heavy rain. Despite the change in weather, Room 6 has launched into the term with great energy, focus, and excitement for learning.

In writing, we’ve been exploring how to craft effective information reports. Each student selected a native New Zealand animal to research and has produced a detailed and thoughtful report based on their findings.

Our reading programme has focused on World War I and its impact on New Zealand. The students created beautiful ANZAC Day artworks and wrote haiku that captured powerful emotions through the use of descriptive language. We've also been reading The Mysterious Stones of Tonga, and a group of students has begun a novel study of Chinatown Girl. These texts have sparked some excellent discussions around cultural identity and history.

In maths, we began the term by learning about area and perimeter, focusing on accurate measurement and estimation using appropriate metric units. More recently, we've started learning how to collect and represent data, and the students are developing confidence in using graphs and tables to show information clearly.

Every second week, Room 6 will be visiting the school library, giving students the opportunity to explore new books and try different genres.

In Physical Education, we are currently building our badminton skills, and students are showing fantastic improvement in hand-eye coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

We are really proud of the mahi our class has shown so far and are excited for what the rest of the term holds!

Ngā mihi nui,
Liam Levy
