Year 7 students begin their Design Tech journey

Loren Kennedy —

We have 100 year 7 students and for the next two terms, they learn about all things design and digital.

Hi, I'm Loren, the Design Technology teacher. We are so lucky to learn in a brand new building with 3D printers, a laser printer, Mac desk tops, electronic textiles resources and more.

Developing initiative and independence are key foci in Design Tech and I have set up the classroom so that students can use it without having to "ask the teacher."

The cupboards are labelled with their contents and there is a display of posters on the wall that gives each step for their project this term. They will be designing their own graphics for a t-shirt.

There is also a board with each step in the process. They put their name on the step they are achieving. This helps them know their own progress and their next step.

We start all our Design Tech classes with a 10 minute colouring in session to promote mindfulness and to get into a chilled-out, design mode. If students want, they can put their work on the "colouring world."

It's great to finally get to know the year 7s and find out more about them and what matters to them as learners.
