The Importance of Tuakana-Teina

Kylie Chambers —

In room 4 we have been embracing tuakana-teina relationships within the Te Puna School learning community. Whether it be working with the older junior classes, middle school or seniors we have been spending time with these classes to embrace the older role models we have within our school. What better way for our youngest children to learn the ropes and start their school journey!

Tuakana-teina is a concept from te ao Māori and refers to the relationship between an older (tuakana) person and a younger (teina) person. Within teaching and learning contexts, this can take a variety of forms such as peer to peer, younger to older, older to younger, or able/expert to less able/expert.

Here are some of the snaps we have captured of these amazing relationships over the last term.
