Paparoa Marae Visit
Members of the community and our School board members enjoyed a wonderful evening at Paparoa Marae last week
"Haere mai ra" came the call of the Kai Karanga, on a very chilly evening at Paparoa Marae last week - but it wasn't the cold air that made my spine tingle. It was the Karanga; welcoming us onto the Marae. What a beautiful experience. This simple act, starting the powhiri, set the tone for an awesome evening.
The Powhiri process included:
He Mihi:(Speech) Tangatawhenua from local Kaumatua Tame Kuka, and a Waiata (song supporting the speaker)
He Mihi:(Speech) Manuhiri: Guest speech - Greeting and a Waiata
Koha: Giving of gift to hosts
Hariru: shaking of hands, Hongi, or kiss on cheek
Kai: Sharing of food and a cuppa
Once the formal proceedings were complete, we returned to the Wharenui where Tame shared, entertained and informed us about some of the history of the Marae, local places of significance and of course, significant people.
This was a wonderful experience for all and a great opportunity to learn more of our Te Puna history.
If you have never had the privilege of attending a Powhiri, or visiting one of our local Marae, keep an eye out in our newsletters. With the support of our Kaumatua, we plan to attend all 4 of our Pirirakau Marae on a regular basis.
The 4 Marae being:
- Tutereinga (Tangitu Rd)
- Potūterangi (Pitua Rd opp St. Joseph's Church)
- Paparoa (Paparoa Rd)
- Tawhitinui (Old Highway Rd)
A very special thank you to Tame and Huia Kuka and the whanau of Paparoa Marae who extended such warmth and generosity to us all.
