Kupe and Te Wheke

Sophie Andrews —

Room 13 we are feeling pretty production focussed with the auditions taking place through last week for the main cast.

Room 13 is devising their class item - a depiction of the story of Kupe and Te Wheke. We have been learning the story, retelling it, and diving deeper into the characters. There is also a team planning the characters, costumes, set, and script.
Retell by Elia VukonaOn the island of Hawaiki lived Kupe and his wife Hine-Te-Aparangi. Kupe was mad because he hadn't caught any fish for days. Kupe found out that it was Muturangi's octopus, Wheke who was eating all the fish. He went to Muturangi and told him to make Wheke stop or he would kill him. Kupe got a group of people and his dog together, and they set out to hunt Wheke. They followed him for weeks. Wheke led them to a far land where cloud was gathered, The Land of the Long White Cloud, we now know as Aotearoa... to be continued...
Character description - Daniel Addidle - WhekeWheke was mean, he stole fish from the villagers' fishing nets. Wheke was nasty and tried to flip Kupe’s waka to kill the people inside. Wheke tried to hide in a cave but he was chased and eventually killed. Wheke was strong and brave even though most people didn't like him.

Character - Luke Catto - WhekeWheke is a mean character. He hates everyone that touches the sea. He despises every boat and waka that sits upon the sea. He tears fish apart and eats their insides. He never shares with other fish and is known for being the nastiest creature in the islands.
Character insight by Hollie Ormsby - Hine-Te-Aparangi

I am always getting dragged into Kupe's situations. Kupe is constantly chasing after whatnot and is never back in time for the dinner I’ve made. When Kupe and I were off following Te Wheke, I was the one who trapped him in the cave, and I and the one who had the idea to cast the spell, and by the way I named Aotearoa. When a stomach bug plagued the islanders, only my homemade Kawakawa tea healed them. I’d like to go cruising around Hawaiki, but no, we always have to do what Kupe says, even though, we all know the only reason he is going on adventures is that he wants to please his father.
