More Science in the Senior School

Kylie Chambers —

Room 11 and 12 were visited by the facilitators from the BCA Wetland Education Programme last week. This is a new programme run especially for Year 5/6 children. They will be visiting I'anson Reserve next week so they were given a brief rundown of what a wetland is and some of the important plants and bird life.

Ngā repo (wetlands) are the important intersection between the whenua and the wai. We have lost 90% of the wetland areas in New Zealand and have only recently started to protect those that remain. Not only do wetlands prevent flooding and drought, sequester carbon, clean water and provide resources, they are a very important habitat for many of our native animals.

The trip will be so much fun next week.
