Waitawheta Camp - Rms 11 and 12

Kylie Chambers —

What a amazing camp.

Our Year 5/6's from Rooms 11 and 12 had an incredible 4 day camp at Waitawheta near Waihi.

They

* hiked the windows walk and braved the dark tunnels

* toasted marshmallows over a fire

* performed at a camp concert

* panned for gold

* swum in the local river

* took part in a beach safety day with the Waihi Lifeguards

* ate the most delicious strawberries

* dared to walk and scream through the burma trail at night

* became more independent - learnt how to organise their own belongings - well some did!

* did dishes without using a machine

* developed deeper friendships with their classmates

* overcame some fears

* laughed and smiled

A huge thanks to all the Teachers and Parents who made the camp possible. You helped make memories that will last forever.

Serenae recalls the Burma Trail

It was colder than cold, only one rope to hold on to.

High pitched voices screamed, dark low voices yelled.

I wondered if those poor kids ran back to the building, I thought to myself “WE CAN DO IT!” (yes WE as in Gabby and me). Gabby was in the front, I was in the back.

We held tight to the thin red rope, nothing was happening but then “BOOOO!!” silence. Yeah we didn't scream or yell even though I almost got a fright. After about 4, maybe 6, or 5 scares we kind of got used to all the BOOS and RAAS mostly because they were all the same sounds.

But we weren’t prepared for what was coming next… Mr Wright in a tree with his phone on, so we had some fun and scared him. 3, 2, 1 “MR WRIGHT!”

Mission complete!

Walking on, although I had two feelings - 1 that we were almost at the end of the trail and 2 that the last scare is near...then purring, yes purring, but not the adorable purring sound cats make! It was a scary spooky kind of purring and worst of all the person in the tree was throwing sticks at me!

We quickly walked away before the person could throw a tree at us, once the noise stopped I was relieved but the purring was back and following us!
