Pasifika o Te Puna Wai o Waipapa

Emma Lumb —

Faka’alofa lahi atu! Kia orana! Ni sa bula! Namaskaram! Mālō e lelei! Talofa lava! Fakatalofa atu! Gude! Tēnā koutou! Warm Pacific greetings!

It was lovely to meet Pasifika students new to Hagley and Hagley students new to our Pasifika group as well as getting together with our regulars during tutor time and lunch last week. We did miss the Year 10s who were rostered home, but we’re planning to have this as a regular event, so there will be plenty more opportunities.

We’re looking forward to the first of the Pacific Language Weeks for the year. We celebrate:

  • Rotuman Language Week from Sunday 8 May – Saturday 14 May
  • Samoa Language Week from Sunday 29 May – Saturday 04 June
  • Kiribati Language Week falls on the first week of the school holidays, from Sunday 10 July – Saturday 16 July

Please be in touch with us if you have any ideas, connections or resources you would like us to include in our celebrations of these languages and communities.

Term 2 fono

Hold the date! We’ve a date marked and a guest speaker booked for a fono next term: 6pm on Thursday, 2nd June. Fingers are crossed that this can be face to face!

Aiga Pasifika tutor group in 2022

2022 has seen the introduction of a new ‘vertical’ tutor group for Pasifika students led by Fa’atu Tamate. Students from Years 10-13 who whakapapa to Pasifika have been able to opt in to this group, and Year 9 ākonga will have the same option to join later in the year. If you are interested in this option or would like any further information please contact Fa’atu, Emma Lumb or the Enrolment Centre.

Best wishes

Finally, we’re sure you’ll join us in wishing two of our staff members our very best as they head off to adventures across Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa: Liz Jones (Librarian) is spending Terms 2 and 3 in the Cook Islands, and Chris Smith (kaiako Māori) is going to be teaching in Niue until the end of the year.
