NCEA is up for review. Minister of Education Chris Hipkins wants to identify opportunities to strengthen NCEA. He’s appointed a Ministerial Advisory Group which has developed some proposals called the ‘Six Big Opportunities’. Everyone - students, teachers, parents, whānau, employers and tertiary organisations - has the opportunity to comment. We'd like to hear what our Hagley community thinks.
What are the six big opportunities? What changes to NCEA have been suggested?
- Change NCEA Level 1 Certificate from 80 credits to 40 credits, consisting of 20 credits for literacy and numeracy and 20 credits for a project
- Strengthen literacy and numeracy at the level needed for success in further learning and employment
- Ensure NCEA Levels 2 and 3 support good connections beyond school, better preparing students for further education or work
- Shift the culture from achieving as many credits as possible to encouraging quality learning and teaching
- Improve the Record of Achievement students receive to give better summary information
- Remove barriers, like NCEA enrolment fees and limited access to special assessment conditions

3: We’re also running a Coffee Morning [and a Coffee Evening] from 9.30 to 10.30 am on Tuesday 14 August in our Student Centre to talk with parents and whānau about NCEA and to find out your thoughts.
