Nanako Sato — Sep 17, 2023

This time of year, we get to witness the stunning cherry blossoms at Hagley Park, and we are equally thrilled to see our students blooming.

Throughout the year, we have maintained a high level of noise, but during exam week, we were able to keep it down. We are grateful for the school's patience and tolerance. The whole school must be relieved to know that all of the concerts for this term have just ended, and we only have one more event left in Term 4.

Big Band Festival

The Hagley Big Band Plus, consisting of current members and alumni, will perform at the Big Band Festival. Catch their shows on Thursday, October 19th, at the Riverside Market starting at noon and on Saturday, October 21st, at Victoria Square starting at 1pm. For additional details, please refer to the event information. https://www.chchbigbandfest.com/

Singer-Songwriters and Groups’ Night

Our school recently held a singer-songwriter and group night, which had been cancelled for a few years. The evening showcased mostly original music, highlighting the abundance of talented singer-songwriters and bands in our school. More photos from the event can be viewed at https://www.instagram.com/hagley_music/?hl=en

Hagley On Show

At our annual music event, Hagley on Show, 16 incredible acts took the stage. The musicians showcased a diverse range of genres, exhibiting exceptional talent. Among them were Sid and Zaiya, who performed both elegant jazz pieces and intense heavy metal numbers. The show was live-streamed, and more than 90 people tuned in on the night. You can still watch the show from the link below if you missed it.

Play It Strange Songwriting Competition Success

We would like to congratulate two acts, the School of Music ākonga (student) Ruby Kaya, and the duo Paolo Reid (Year 12) and Nova Taukamo (Year 13), who were selected to be in the top 40 out of 659 in the nationwide songwriting competition, Play It Strange. They received $750 worth of recording opportunities in the professional studio. Once they finish re-recording their songs, we will share them with you.

Ruby Kaya

One of the Peace Songwriting Competition winners, Ruby Kaya’s winning song “Couldn’t Help Myself”, is out now. This year, the unstoppable songstress has won three competitions: the Peace Songwriting Competition, the RockQuest Solo/Duo category in the Canterbury Region, and the Play It Strange Competition. If you have not heard it, please listen to her song from the link below - Ruby's song is track number 9.
