Pre-Health
2024 has been a great year for Hagley Pre-Health, with many on track to receiving their qualification.
While some students plan to return to Hagley next year, others are planning to continue their pathway towards Registered Nursing or other health-related qualifications.
We introduced a new pathway towards University Entrance, where students studied relevant NCEA Level 3 subjects but also attended nursing classes as part of the Pre-Health, including work experience.
We have just completed a module, learning about why Te Tiriti o Waitangi is important in healthcare. In Science, we are finishing up our chemistry and microscope activities. Students have also been able to attend an academic writing class at Ara.
Some comments from students this year:
“I’m so thankful for this course because I learned how to take care of people in a rest home by having this placement. Without the course, I wouldn’t have been able to decide which profession I should be in the future "– Yuki Devaras (20)
“Placement taught me to be more confident and helpful to others. It helped me to find my strengths and know my weaknesses to improve” – Gabriel Andaya (19)
“I’m really enjoying the course as at the start of the year I felt anxious around my study abilities. As I progressed I felt supported by my teachers and classmates, and through that I feel a lot more confident and independent with study” – Brooke Sinclair (21)
“I’m very thankful for this course because of the placement. The placement taught me to care for the elderly, and I always wanted to be able to help people in need. It really helped me to develop my courage to interact with other people, especially as they all come from a different culture and background” – Van Valerio (24)
“I learned to communicate with other staff on placement, be confident to try to learn, engage in things that are new, don’t be shy” – Fye Golimlim (18)
We are currently doing interviews for places in the programme for next year, so if you, or someone you know is interested, please let the team at the Enrolment Centre know.
