ERO Evaluation for Hagley

Mike Fowler —

An Education Review Office evaluation of our school is starting during Term 1. A new collaborative review model is being used, working with us over time. Previous ERO reviews were short and intensive events lasting about five days.

The review process gets underway with us talking with ERO about Hagley’s context and our key priorities for 2021. That’s where our strategic goals are critical. They will have a significant role in establishing next steps for progressing the ERO evaluation.

ERO aims to stand in a student’s shoes when looking at a school. Their approach is driven by their whakatauki: ko te tamaiti te pūtake o te kaupapa [the child – the heart of the matter].

The areas that guide an ERO evaluation are:

  • our Board of Trustees and their governance of the school
  • that effective leadership is happening in many places across the school
  • that Hagley is focused on relevant targets
  • our connections and relationships with our school community
  • our teaching: that our students are participating and learning in a collaborative process
  • our programmes: that our curriculum design sets clear and appropriate expectations
  • that we’re building our capacity to improve as a school
  • that we're improving our ability to evaluate what we do.
