Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori! Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori ki Te Puna Wai o Waipapa

Jasmine Lambert —

In week 9 of the term, we celebrated Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) alongside the rest of Aotearoa.

The events to promote the use of te reo Māori with staff and students, inside and outside of the classroom, were lead by our fantastic team of kaiako (teachers) from the Māori Department.

It was a busy week with at least one event or activity to get involved in each week. Some of the highlights included an interactive display in our staffroom for staff to get to know each other through te reo, a tutor class Kahoot! competition (congrats to 10TAL!), daily sharing of kīwaha (sayings) and whakataukī (proverbs), professional learning for our teachers to increase their use of te reo within their classes, a fantastic display from our librarians in Tāheke (our library), and the annual visit of Early Childhood Education students within the kura to our whare - hosted by our Mātauranga Māori and Kapa Haka students and their kaiako.

Whū! What a week! We’re already excited to celebrate this significant event again next year and hope our students, teachers, and staff continue to learn and speak te reo Māori within our kura and beyond. Ka Puāwai te koru, ka puāwai te tāngata, ka puāwai te reo me ōna tikanga i Te Puna Wai o Waipapa!
