It's been a busy term in the After 3 Jazz programme.

Performances

On September 7th, students and tutors had a very successful and well attended performance evening at A Rolling Stone. If you want to view some of the performances, you can on our You Tube channel here, but please do not re-share on social media: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDP8xzCijkfItSspLOEK77SfEIlJjIfE-&si=GJOcn0d8lKpYql2D Our last public performance event for the year is in the early evening on November 2nd and everyone is warmly invited to come along (more details to come). A student/staff collaborative band is also going to perform at the After 3 Expo in the school café in the early evening of Thursday November 23rd - can’t wait!

Recording Project

Students are busy prepping for a recording session this weekend in our studio here at school. Recording is an excellent learning process which presents slightly different challenges to live performances. The final product is an album released on the course Bandcamp page which you can view here: Music | After Three Jazz at Hagley (bandcamp.com)

Student pathways

We have kept in touch with three students from the 2022 course who are studying performance music at undergraduate level this year. An outstanding young brass player, Kaia Johnstone, has had a busy & successful first year as a Music major at Te Koki (NZSM) in Wellington. Mel Lecompte is a bass player studying Jazz performance BMUS student at Te Pukenga here and pianist Jack Stewart-Ward is taking performance papers this year as part of a Music minor in his BSc studies at UC. A very promising musician, Jack has an upcoming UC public performance exam and we will advise of the date/venue as soon as it is finalised.

Looking forward to 2024, we have a promising level of interest from students in the current Year 13 cohort who wish to continue their music study in a part-time capacity in next year's course.
