Student Representative on the Board of Trustees

Zyon Taukamo —

2022 has been yet another consecutive year of uncertainty and change, and the results of this continue to be felt throughout our kura. From Covid-19 to recruiting a new Tumuaki, the Board of Trustees has been very busy.

I was fortunate enough to be elected as the kaiwhakarite ākonga (Student Representative) for the Board of Trustees in late September of last year, and so far it has been a valuable and, at times stressful, experience. Coming into the role, I had a pre-existing, yet limited, understanding of what the Board did. Previously, my mother had held Board roles at other schools and had likened the relationship between the School, the Board, and the Senior Leadership Team as that of a Metro Bus Service where in the School itself was the bus, the Board of Trustees set the route and the Senior Leadership Team drove it. Upon attending the first few meetings, my understanding of the role gradually increased and it was fascinating to see the hard mahi that the Board and the Senior Leadership Team put into our kura to ensure it keeps running smoothly.

It has been an absolute privilege to be a part of making the important decisions for our school and I look forward to continuing in this role throughout the rest of my term.
