Basketball success

Rowan Milburn —

Our Senior Girls' & Boys' Basketball teams both played brilliantly to finish runner-up in the recent Southern Cup at Winter Tournament held in Dunedin

The Senior Boys' Basketball Team made a great start to their tournament with two wins. One win was over Papanui by one point and another was a tight win against Cashmere! The girls started with a one point loss and then a good win.

On day two, the girls had two comfortable wins and the boys won one very convincingly in their first game and had a tough loss at night. The good news is that both teams got through to the final anyway. Absolutely fantastic! Time and time again, our students show what great young people they are both on and off the court.

The finals: The girls had an incredibly close finish, going into overtime as the score was tied. Unfortunately, Columba College took the momentum into extra time and won in the end by a margin of five points. What an incredible game.

The boys played Shirley Boys' High and found themselves a bit behind early on but hung on there and clawed their way back. The game stayed close until Shirley Boys' pulled ahead in the fourth quarter to win by 9 points. Another close game. Both teams were incredibly proud of what they achieved. It is the first time a Hagley team has made a final, let alone that both teams made the final on the same day! How good!!

Thanks to Anna, Bridget, Clint, Emma, and Will for their coaching, managing, physio duties, driving, cooking, cleaning, motivating and encouraging. You guys are awesome and our students are so lucky that they had this amazing experience.
