Whakawātea of Wainuku

Jasmine Lambert —

Construction has finished on our second new build, Wainuku, and was blessed with a whakawātea (clearing/opening) conducted by kaumātua from Tuahiwi on Thursday 24th November.

Maaka Tau and Liz Kererū (Ngāi Tūāhuriri) led the proceedings which marked the clearing of Wainuku for us to use the space and prepare for classes to begin there in the 2023 school year. Wainuku, the name gifted to us by our Ngāi Tūāhuriri mana whenua, represents the body of water underground; the reservoir that wells up to the surface. Wainuku will be a hub of creativity and production, being used for Art, Fashion, Jewellery, Hospitality, Computer Sciences, and Hard Material Technologies. Wainuku is a puna whakaaro and a puna mahi- a think and work tank. We’d like to acknowledge our kaumātua from Tuahiwi who generously supported us in marking this important milestone in the history of our kura.
