Tāheke: A Term 3 Round Up

Rebecca Howie —

Kia ora koutou katoa, Term 3 has been incredibly full and exciting for us here at the library.

Author Visit

We were privileged to have renowned New Zealand author Mary-anne Scott (Coming Home to Roost, Sticking With Pigs, The Tomo) visit and speak to six junior classes about reading and writing books. Our ākonga were inspired by her tips and tricks - one session saw a group of eager students gleaning more encouragement and wisdom from Scott once it had finished. Many thanks to Mary-anne Scott for visiting us, and to Read NZ who made this event possible.

Aotearoa NZ School Library Week

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, Tāheke participated in the first ever Aotearoa NZ School Library Week, which had great success. As part of this week, SLANZA (School Library Association of New Zealand Aotearoa) ran a social media competition where anyone who used the hashtag #AotearoaSchoolLibraryWeek in their posts went in the draw to win a book prize. Tāheke took part in this, and we were lucky enough to have been picked, thanks to our posts on Instagram & TikTok!

Book Spine Poetry Competition

There’s something quite poetic about a simple stack of books – especially these ones! This term we ran a competition to find the top three poems created from Book Spines. We had 65 entries, and it was so tough to judge! The library staff selected our favourite 15, from which Rowan was given the unenviable task of choosing the final three. A massive thank you to everyone who entered, and congratulations to the winners, who were awarded a certificate and café voucher.
Take a look at the winning poems below.

A Fond Farewell

On a personal note, my time here at Hagley has come to a close. It has been a real pleasure to work with such talented colleagues and students. Though my time here was short, it has certainly been memorable, and I am so grateful for all I have learned at Te Puna Wai o Waipapa.
