Hagley Pre-Health

Rebecca Crowe —

The Hagley Pre-Health students are off to an enthusiastic start this year. We started work experience in our clinical rest home or hospital placements in Term 2.

We are enjoying gaining skills and confidence in caring for people that need assistance with activities of daily living, after learning about this in class during Term 1. We are loving the hands-on experience and have also completed our comprehensive first aid certificates. Last week, we participated in a module where we learned about safe moving and handling of our patients using special equipment.

Students learning about safe moving and handling of our patients using special equipment.

“The things that I enjoyed was learning how to use the hoists and being a patient. I learned how to use a hoist and how to do it on an actual person and it was fun. I also learned how to do the slide sheets like sliding the person to make them comfortable in their bed.” – Jedt, Pre-Health Student

“I enjoyed and learned a lot including health and safety of us and the patients. The highlight of doing our safety is having proper posture and technique in pretty much all of the tasks we do in work and everyday life. Also, I’ve enjoyed practicing the different kinds of equipment such as the Sara Steady, slide sheets and Full-hoist machine.” – John, Pre-Health Student

Next, we will be learning about infection control and the significance and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in healthcare. A huge thank you to Ringa Atawhai Mātauranga who have provided us with some amazing resources for this work.
