Learn Your Way - It's All About Flexibility

Mike Fowler —

Flexibility and 'Hagley' are words that go hand in hand. When asked why students chose to come to Hagley in Years 12 and 13, many give 'flexibility' as the reason.

Flexibility means different things to different people. We've just developed nine stories for our senior prospectus, each featuring a student who's joined us in Year 12 or 13 this year. You can read several of these stories in this newsletter or access all of them from our website.

Hagley offered each of these students what they needed - and all of those needs were different:

· For Rongomai, the Hagley School of Music offered the opportunity to develop as a vocalist and musician, as well as flexibility around learning reo Māori. She also valued the help teachers gave her in managing her learning.

· For Chris, it was time and support to catch up, with his teachers open to using different learning styles. Chris also appreciated the social environment at Hagley.

· For Zoey, more individual teaching was what she needed, teachers noticing and caring when she wasn't thriving - and understanding she had a pretty good excuse when she's late from fighting fires!

· For Ryan, being seen as an individual mattered - and teachers who listened.

· For Lucy, it was the flexibility of part time study, teachers moving deadlines and working with her outside class.

· For Josh, it was super helpful teachers and a connected curriculum, with a course connecting Drama and English that he found really engaging.

· For Tilly, taking fully internally assessed subjects so that she could work her kayaking training around them, plus Hagley's wide subject choice.

· For Lydia, teachers who encouraged her to drive her learning forward, plus her individual learning plan to achieve her UE goal in 6 months.

· For Grace, being able to combine study with her passion for riding.

All nine students came here so they could learn their way - we look forward to making learning work for you.
