Anne Galloway —

Introducing the Diversity Services Team at Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - Hagley College.

This exceptional group of individuals works hard to assist our former refugee and migrant students in their studies at our kura. They bring a wealth of knowledge, lived-experience, and often the ability to speak multiple languages, which is incredibly helpful when our ākonga are learning the complexities of the English language. Meet the team:

Kia ora. My name is Anne Galloway and I am the Diversity Services Manager at Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - Hagley College. My role is to lead an amazing team of multi-lingual support staff - Namrud, Nasrin, Naima, Rachel and Bushra - who support the former refugees and migrant students learning English here at Hagley.


Kia ora. My name is Rachel and I look after the enrolments and pastoral care for students from migrant and refugee background. I also provide bilingual support for English Language Learning classes and administration for the Learning Communities team.

Kia ora. My name is Nasrin Shalizi. I have been working at Hagley for 17 years with the wonderful ELL Dept and now also a team member of the fantastic Diversity Team.

My role covers 3 main areas:

  • Teacher Aide - my goal is to support and assist our students as much as I possibly can. Learning English as a second language is a very difficult task.
  • Interpreter - being able to speak a few languages other than English has been very helpful in making a close connection with our students of diverse nationalities.
  • Pastoral care of our refugee and migrant students within the classroom and outside.

Namrud Gebreab and 
I come from Eritrea.
My roles at Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - Hagley College are bilingual support, pastoral care and Diversity Support.
I am able to speak Amharic & Tigrinya.

Kia ora. My name is Bushra, and I come from Somalia. I moved to Christchurch at the end of 2021. I have been working at Hagley College since 2022 as a bi-lingual teacher aide. I speak Somali and Arabic, and I enjoy working with the community.
