Year 11 Well-being Programme Information evening

Rowan Milburn – Deputy Principal: Student Wellbeing —

We were delighted with the turnout of parents and students at this event, which was held on November 29th.

Thank you to everyone who attended. The purpose of the evening was to connect with our community around the Year 11 Well-being programme, which will be piloted in 2018. Year 11 students will study five subjects and also engage with a four hour well-being programme. The programme will involve specific teaching around strategies to manage stress and anxiety, careers advice, goal setting and individual mentoring. One hour a week will be dedicated to Health Education and one hour around getting participating in physical activity.

Research suggests that there are many benefits in students having a focus on their well-being and the link between well-being and learning is also widely documented.

One of the key benefits of this programme is the continuation of the tutor in our students' lives. The tutor from Year 9 and 10 will continue into Year 11 with new students being allocated one of two additional tutors. This means that for many of our students the tutor remains their advocate and will be the first point of contact for families. Students in Year 11 will also remain with their friends for a small part of the week.

The full presentation is attached to this article and may be of interest to parents and students outside of Year 11. Although this is a pilot for Year 11 in 2018, it is the intention of the College to ensure that well-being across the year levels is a focus for the future and evident in our strategic planning.

Although credits will be offered as part of this programme it is not the main focus. We envisage students having the opportunity to gain 8-10 credits over the course of the year.
