Digital Technology
It's been a busy term for our students in the Digital Technology arena.
Bebras Challenge
Congratulations to Jasmin Berry, Jasper Clements, Bob Haywood, Luke Miles, Thavishka Pahala Ralalage, Levi Pronk-Jones, Orrin Robinson, and Alfie Strangwick for achieving a Bronze level in the Bebras Challenge.
Our Year 11 Digital technology class were the first students at our school to take part in the Bebras challenge. Bebras is an international initiative aiming to promote Computer Science, and computational thinking among school students at all ages. 46 of our students from Year 9 to Year 13 Computer Science and digital technologies classes also took part in the challenge. Year 9 and 10 students are especially encouraged to take part in this event. Students can check their score by logging in to the Bebras site. There were 939 Year 11 to 13 students who took part nationally, and 1478 Year 9 and 10 students. The follow up challenge will be available between 4 November and 18 November this year.
Evolocity Launch
The 2024 launch of the Evolocity took place at the Airforce Museum of NZ, Wigram on the12th March. Six of our students attended. Vishan Amarnath, Mushroom Angelo, Jayden Edwards, Andre Hamilton, Thavishka Pahala Ralalage, and Gilby Shepherd. The event was organised to introduce the Evolocity programme.
At our school, Evolocity is an extracurricular activity that enables students to build an electric vehicle. Evolocity are on a mission to break down barriers and inspire young Kiwis into sustainable engineering while fast forwarding New Zealand’s clean tech future. Alongside their teachers and mentors, students plan, engineer and manufacture electric karts or bikes – all with sustainability (and race day) in mind. Regional final events happen at the end of the year where vehicles take part in drag races, slalom, endurance and efficiency competitions.
This year we hope to enter two teams, and maybe take out another engineering/innovation prize but, most importantly, have fun.
Year 12 Computer Science
The Year 12 Computer Science class have completed the image processing unit. To show that Computer Science can be visually stunning, here are some of the fractal images generated by students.
Images created by Rowan Adler, Aayush Bhatt, Kate Dalagan, Mohamed Shanif, and Alexander Viterbo.
Year 12 Electronics
Isabella Rillstone and Hadley Kibblewhite constructing a VEX robot. The robot will be used to experiment with robotics programming and enables students to enter VEX robotics competitions.
The purchase of the robot was made possible with a grant from the Tait Foundation. The grant will also be used to fit out our electronics lab enabling students to work on a wide range of digital technology projects.
