Cole Sutherland (Year 11) was selected to join YMCA as a participant for their Young Artist Development Programme.

From the 17th - 23rd December, ten high school students were given the opportunity to work on a mural project under the artistic curatorship of New Zealand artist Hayley King (Flox) to design and paint a large scale mural in the city centre. This project was funded by the Christchurch City Council and run by the YMCA Christchurch.

Working 8 hour days, these students completed a two day workshop developing techniques in mural making before taking to the street and painting the 40-metre mural.

The workshops were held in the YMCA's free-to-access makerspace at the 4C Centre.

During this time, they learnt artistic skills of stencil design and cutting, masking, squiggle grid scaling and spray paint techniques. They then worked as a team to paint a 40-metre mural at our site here in the city. Now completed, this mural can be viewed on the corner of Rolleston Avenue and Cashel Street.
