Tīaho Cultural Fashion Awards 2023

Vicki Dixon —

Tīaho is to celebrate our cultural diversity at Te Puna Wai o Waipapa through fashion - both clothing and accessories.

The Tīaho Cultural Fashion show is on Thurs 8 June. Everyone’s interpretation of “culture” can be very different - through either whakapapa, connection or your sense of place and this is an opportunity to express that. Take a look at last year's lookbook here: School of Fashion Book 2022 - Hagley College

Hāpori Award: This category is open to all levels of experience from across the school.

Junior Designer Award: This category is for Year 9 and 10 students.

Accessories Award: Cultural adornment, recognises worn items, created as fine or expressive art, used to define or express culture.

Kaiako Award: Top staff entry.

Special Awards:

Tīaho Award (Overall Winner): Culturally inspired fashion look supreme winner.

Commercial Award: Garments with a strong commercial appeal.

Textile Award: Recognises design woven, knitted, dyed, printed, or involving surface ornamentation.

Tuākana/Tāina: For entrants displaying the values of tuākana/tāina - reciprocal learning and collaboration.

Rules of Entry:

Your design must be accompanied by an explanation of the cultural connection your piece has drawn from tuhononga. How does the piece represent your cultural narrative?

The designer may seek assistance in technical or cultural aspects of the design, however, they would be expected to have the majority stake in the work.

When a chosen cultural reference is not your own you must work in collaboration with someone from that culture.

The garment will need to be of a good quality/finish.

The finished garment must be presented with all accessories.

The designer will preferably provide a model.

Please see the Enrolment Centre for Entry Forms.
