Hagley Pre-Health

Becca Crowe - Pre-Health Programme Leader —

Hagley Pre-Health students started their work experience placement this term.

Every Wednesday, they spend some time in an aged residential care facility assisting residents with activities of daily living

Their learning about infection control has been put to good use, with both facilities having COVID outbreaks. Their assistance has been greatly appreciated, especially due to a high amount of sickness within the facilities.

Earlier this term, students attended two sessions with physiotherapist Rebecca Washbourn, where they practiced safe moving and handling on each other. They now feel more confident when assisting people who have mobility impairments, whether it be using a hoist, or standing up somebody from a chair.

“I learned the proper posture to help the patient without hurting them or myself” – Devie Estrada

“We got to learn proper handling and the use of equipment such as the hoists in order to help us prepare for the future (using in nursing practice), and ensure our safety and the safety of the patients. My favourite part was being lifted by the hoist as I got to understand the perspective of the patient” – Kristyl Justiniano

“For me I always prefer to practice first, so it was an enjoyable experience and we had fun at the same time” – Majda El Haijii

A special thank you to Sue Alexander and Rebecca Washbourn for providing these learning experiences for us, and another huge thank you to the aged residential placements for supporting their learning in practice.
