New Heavy Truck Learner Licence - Class 2 with Hagley Adult Literacy Centre

Robyn Peterson —

We had a successful year in 2021 delivering Workplace Literacy and Numeracy sessions to 63 learners, including 43 from migrant and former refugee backgrounds.

These one-on-one sessions saw learners working on their reading and writing skills, improving their knowledge of computing, health and safety, spoken English, NZ workplace culture, and everyday Kiwi English. We were thrilled to welcome these learners from a variety of industries - health care, construction, retail, education, public health and safety, manufacturing, and transport.

One of our learner’s commented: “Since starting the course I’ve learnt so much to help me with work and also everyday life; I now have the confidence to read out loud at staff meetings and when participating in workplace training such as First Aid courses”.

Their employers also notice the benefits of the course to their employees, seeing increased confidence, participation in more advanced workplace training, and increased job satisfaction.

What do we have on offer?

We are thrilled to offer a ‘Heavy Vehicle Class 2 learner licence’ course, which was created in response to a need amongst those working in the transport industry. Participants will learn all aspects of the heavy vehicle road code in preparation for sitting the NZTA learner licence. Many driving schools require this licence before accepting people into their practical course.

We also have spaces available for the Workplace programme this year. The course is for between 25 and 80-hours tuition, either one-on-one with a tutor, or in small groups. It is free for eligible learners who are in employment. If you know of anyone who could benefit from our workplace programme, either a learner or employer, please contact HALC or pass on our details. See our website (www.hagleyadultliteracy.org) or facebook for further information.
