Junior National Honours 2023

Suzanne Waters —

The following students were recognised at the Awards Assembly on December 11.

Poppy EntwisleYear 10

Poppy was selected for the Canterbury Scholastics Surfing Team which is for the top high school surfers around the country. Poppy dominated the early rounds of the under 16 girls’ competition and came second. She missed out on first place by only 1 point! Poppy is in the younger year of the age group and the surfer she lost to is older and a New Zealand representative for surfing. Poppy's result helped the Canterbury team come second overall in the competition.

Poppy has won many competitions in the South Island in the Open Women’s division and is proving to be a top competitor in a very difficult sport. Surfing competitions are very tough because you only have 15-20 minutes to catch the two best waves of the heat to win, often in very challenging conditions.

Charlotte O’BrienYear 10

Charlotte was in the first youth NZ team, representing NZ at the Cheerleading World Competition in Florida this year. After qualifying for Worlds, her team competed twice, coming 5th in the world. In 2023 she has competed nationally multiple times, with her level 3 team earning Runner up Grand Champs at the NZ Super Nationals, and 4th out of 47 teams in the Australia/NZ competition. Charlotte has performed at various events and is incredibly proud of her sport.

Aoi Higashide – Year 9

Aoi is a competitor in Rhythmic gymnastics and has represented NZ in the Junior International Category. She is a National champion, placing 3rd in Ball, 4th in Club, 6th in Hoop and 5th in Ribbon and an overall placing of 6th in New Zealand.

Aoi came 2nd in the National trial for representing NZ (the top three qualified) at the Australian National and Singapore Open. At this event she made Hoop in the final and came 5th in the Singapore Open.
